Cocktail reception with the Hon. Tony Smith @ Capital M

AustCham Beijing, in conjunction with Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Australian Embassy Beijing, is delighted to invite you to a cocktail reception honoring the visit of The Honourable Tony Smith MP, Speaker of the Australian House of Representatives.

The Hon. Mr. Smith holds third most senior office in Australia, and is visiting Beijing with a Parliamentary delegation of five MPs from both sides of the parliament, including the Chair of the Australia-China Friendship Society David Coleman. The cocktail reception will provide a fine opportunity to showcase Australian businesses.

About the Honourable Tony Smith MP, Speaker of the Australian House of Representatives:

  • Tony was born in 1967 and grew up in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs, being first educated in Kerrimuir Primary School and then at Carey Baptist Grammar School.
  • After school, he received a Bachelor of Commerce and Arts (Hons) at the University of Melbourne.
  • After finishing university, he worked as a policy researcher for the Institute of Public Affairs, before working as a media adviser and then senior adviser to the Federal Treasurer, the Hon Peter Costello MP.
  • Tony was elected as the Federal Member for Casey at the 2001 election, and was re-elected at the 2004, 2007, 2010, 2013 and 2016 elections.
  • Tony has been a member of numerous House of Representatives committees including the Standing Committee on Science and Innovation and the Standing Committee on Ageing. He was also the Chair of the Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters and the Joint Standing Committee on Public Accounts and Audit. In January 2007 Tony was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister in the Howard Government. From December 2013 to August 2015, Tony was Chair of the Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters and Chair of the Coalition Backbench Economics and Finance Policy Committee.
  • On 10 August 2015, Tony was elected as the 30th Speaker of the House of Representatives and was re-elected as Speaker on 30 August 2016.
  • Tony is married to Pam, and together they have two sons.
  • Tony is a lifelong supporter of the Carlton Football Club and shares the love of the game with his boys. He also enjoys restoring classic cars – including his Holden Panel Van.
