China to set up first University in China to rival America’s Caltech in innovation

Westlake University will be the first of its kind in China – a doctorate-granting private institution which primarily focuses on high level research and innovation. It will enrol its first batch of 130 PhD students starting in September. Shi Yigong – one of the leaders of the institute’s preparation team, stated that their research facilities will be on par with Peking University and Tsinghua University within 5 years, and enrol at least 5,000 students. The campus for Westlake will be in Hangzhou’s Sandun Town.

Report Shows that inequality in school performance will cost Australia $20 billion

The report “What Price the Gap? Education and Inequality in Australia” released by the Public Education is based on 6 years of data and shows that the performance of students at the bottom of the performance curve are falling faster and further than other students. It then quantifies the economic loss caused by those students sliding to the bottom. The gaps were found to be the most pronounced for math, science and reading.

Ian O’Connor appointed as the new chair for the Higher Education Standards Panel in Australia

Mr O’Connor, the new chair will be leading the panel towards a future where research is a necessary component in Universities. The panel will also oversee a review of Higher Education Provider standards as address whether Australia should introduce the equivalent of US community colleges which allow students another pathway to receiving a full degree at university. Another key issue that will be addressed by the panel is the effectiveness of applying Australian Higher Education standards to overseas campuses of Australian Institutions.
